Godzilla 2 adds writers Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields

It looks as though ‘Godzilla 2’ has found its writers.

According to Variety, the upcoming ‘Godzilla’ sequel has enlisted ‘Krampus’ writers Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields to pen the script.

“Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields, who wrote ‘Krampus’ for Legendary, are on board to pen the script for the next instalment in the ‘Godzilla’ franchise,” they reveal. And it looks as though production is really ramping up.

Not just for the sequel…

“Sources have also indicated Legendary might be preparing to set up a writers room to help create the upcoming Godzilla-King Kong universe the company has planned since sending the distribution rights for ‘Kong: Skull Island’ back to Warner Bros. after originally setting pic up at Universal.”

It’s no secret that Legendary is looking to expand both the ‘Godzilla’ and ‘King Kong’ universes… and creating a giant creature franchise seems like the most lucrative way to go.

Back last year, Legendary announced that they would be teaming up with Warner Bros. for all future ‘Godzilla’ and ‘King Kong’ movies… taking the right for ‘King Kong’ away from Universal Pictures.

A bold move, but it could make some interesting big screen team ups.

But will Dougherty and Shields be part of this writers room?

“As of now, it looks as if Dougherty and Shields will just pen the script ‘Godzilla 2’,” they explained. “But this draft could be the starting point for a possible writers room.”

Either way, it looks as though big things are coming for the titans of the giant creature genre. But who will direct the upcoming ‘Godzilla’ sequel? After Gareth Edwards left the franchise behind, we’ll have to wait and see.
