Speaking about the choice to re-release the film with this major change, director Takashi Yamazaki explained the fastidious work that went on behind the scenes to deliver the giant lizard in all its black-and-white glory.
"The team did not just make the film monochrome but coordinated it shot-by-shot, making full use of various mats, as if they were creating a new film," Yamazaki said in a statement on Godzilla Minus One's official website. "The goal was to create an image tone as if taken by the masters of black-and-white photography".

"I asked them to unearth as much skin texture and landscape detail as possible, which were latent in the captured data. Then, Godzilla appeared, as terrifying and horrifying as in a documentary," Yamazaki added.
Produced by Toho Studios, the acclaimed film is set in post-war Japan, seeing the country at a low point when a new menace emerges in the form of a giant monster.
Godzilla Minus One/ Minus Color becomes available to stream on Netflix from August 1. Godzilla Minus One is currently on the same platform.
