Godzilla vs Kong smashed into cinemas and onto HBO Max last month, breaking pandemic records.

The film, directed by Adam Wingard, is part of studio Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise and was thought to be the final instalment, but it appears things have changed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, after looking at Godzilla vs Kong's receipts, the studio is exploring the possibility of making a spin-off movie with Wingard.

While Wingard is extremely busy right now, working on the ThunderCats movie and Paramount's Face/Off sequel, Wingard and Legendary have reportedly been discussing ideas, with the title Son of Kong being floated internally.

No further details about the project have yet emerged.

Speaking of Wingard's ThunderCats movie, earlier this month the director assured fans the film won't look like Cats.

"I want to do a ThunderCats film that takes you back to that '80s aesthetic," he said. "I don't want to reinvent the way they look; I want them to look like ThunderCats. I don't want to do it live action, either.

"I don't want it to look like Cats, I don't want those kinds of issues – no disrespect to that director, whom I don't mean to throw under the bus any more than everyone else has. I want to do a movie you've never seen before.

"A hybrid CGI film that has a hyper real look and somehow bridges the gap between cartoon and CGI. That's the starting point."

Godzilla vs Kong is available to rent at home in the UK from Prime Video, iTunes and other participating digital retailers, while it is available to watch now in US cinemas and on HBO Max in the US.
