Yahoo Movies Godzilla x Kong sets new record with huge box-office opening
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has smashed box office expectations, racking up the biggest worldwide opening of the year so far.
The new outing in the MonsterVerse sees Godzilla and Kong enjoying an unusual truce and teaming up against a powerful titan who is set to destroy the world, all while the giant gorilla and Jia (Kaylee Hottle) develop a special bond.
Directed by Adam Wingard, the film stomped into cinemas in 64 territories including the US on March 29. In its first weekend (March 29-31), Godzilla x Kong has grossed $194 million worldwide, followed by Kung Fu Panda 4 with $53.8 million and Dune: Part Two closing its fifth weekend at $29.5 million (via Screen Daily).

These are huge numbers for the monster mash-up flick, whose previous entry, Godzilla vs Kong, debuted with $31.6 million in its first three-day weekend in March 2021, a figure arguably impacted by the Covid pandemic.
With Wingard once again at the helm after the first film, Godzilla x Kong's record opening may pave the road for a third film. And it seems that the filmmaker isn't short of ideas for a threequel, should it happen.

"I think the seductive thing as a filmmaker when you've done two movies is to complete it as this trilogy — that's always what everybody expects," Wingard told Deadline when asked about a potential follow-up at the premiere.
"We'll see. It really depends on how the movie does," he continued. "I think that there's a lot of really cool ideas we have [about] where we would go with it. I'm open to it and excited for what the future brings."
