The Goonies reunite 40 years on to celebrate Ke Huy Quan

The co-stars of the 1985 hit are still close friends, supporting Ke Huy Quan at his handprint ceremony and Love Hurts premiere.

It's one of the most beloved films of the 80s which launched the superstar careers of its then child cast, and now The Goonies have reunited 40 years on to celebrate a huge milestone for one of their number.

Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green and screenwriter Christopher Colombus joined their old co-star Ke Huy Quan to attend his hand-and-footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, as well as his LA premiere for new action comedy Love Hurts.

Quan was recognised for his career achievements at the prestigious ceremony, following in the footprints of many other Hollywood stars chosen for the milestone before him.

Brolin, who played Brand in The Goonies, gave a speech to his friend Quan, who played Data: "You have that midas touch, my friend, and you have it because you have that heart of gold that you've always had.

"I could not be happier for you — I know we all are, all us Goonies here — for an honour that is not only totally deserved, but celebrates all that is right in this industry. Love you, pal."

Brolin also read out a letter from Steven Spielberg, which said: "I'm proud of you for your meteoric rise as a child and then your second meteoric rise as a grown-up. And believe me, very few of us get two bites at that apple."

Although Goonies star Sean Astin wasn't at the ceremony, he delighted fans by later joining the group on the red carpet for the premiere of Quan's film Love Hurts.

Despite The Goonies being a huge hit in 1985 and Quan having appeared in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom a year earlier, he struggled to land acting roles as the years passed.

Eventually, Quan took a 20-year break from acting, instead moving into stunt co-ordinating and assistant directing.

However, Quan made a huge comeback to the screen in 2022, winning a best supporting actor Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Speaking at his handprint ceremony about his dream to achieve the milestone at the theatre, he said: "Of course, it was such a wild dream, and over the years, I would realise how naive that dream was. As the years passed, I would walk by and be reminded how that once hopeful actor turned into just another moviegoer. And now here we are, more than 40 years later, and not only am I acting again, but that crazy dream actually came true."

Quan has recently starred in TV series American Born Chinese and Loki, as well as voicing a character for Kung Fu Panda 4, with plenty more acting work in the pipeline.

It isn't just in photos from the Love Hurts premiere that Goonies fans can see the old castmates reunite - they also appear together on screen in the forthcoming movie.

Love Hurts stars Quan as a realtor pulled back into a life of crime by his old partner, and Astin also makes an appearance in the action comedy with him.

Quan recently posted a video to social media of their screen reunion, saying: "The last time Sean and I shared any meaningful scenes together was 40 years ago on The Goonies."

He added that Cohen also joined them: "Jeff Cohen is my entertainment lawyer and he said I want to come visit you, and it was just so cool to have three Goonies on the set. That was a very special day."

The video ended with Quan shouting out one of the film's famous catchphrases, "Goonies never say die!".

As recently as September 2024, Goonies stars were denying that a sequel was going to be made decades on from the original hit.

Martha Plimpton posted on Instagram in the run up to the US election: "People, there is no ‘Goonies 2’ script, there is no one ‘attached'. Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real. What IS real is CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION AND VOTE!!!!"

However, last month it was reported that The Goonies 2 was in development at Warner Bros, with original writer Colombus attached.

So far, nothing about a possible cast or storyline has been announced.

The reports are still unconfirmed and Spielberg, who co-wrote the original, said in 2020: "Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water."
