‘The Girl on the Train’s breakout star Haley Bennett has been dropping some big hints that she may be about to step into the lethal heels of Batman anti-hero Catwoman.

The speculation comes a few weeks after The Hollywood Reporter broke news that ‘Suicide Squad’ director David Ayer was to return to the DC Extended Universe to direct a film based on the ‘Gotham City Sirens’ series of comics.

With Margot Robbie reportedly on board and reprising her role as Harley Quinn, the movie would be about the women of Batman’s particular corner of the DC Comics superhero world.

Bennett, who won acclaim for her role opposite Emily Blunt in last year’s mystery thriller ‘The Girl on the Train’, cryptically posted a picture of Catwoman to Instagram last week without any caption or statement. Naturally, the speculation began.

That same day she posted a picture of a meal she was having with the caption “meow”. She also posted another picture of her new pixie hair-style, which is reminiscent of the one some iterations of the character have.

Catwoman, aka Selina Kyle is every bit the icon Batman, Robin and the Joker are, and has been a mainstay in the DC Comics world since her first appearance in ‘Batman #1’, just a year after Batman himself debuted in ‘Detective Comics #27’.

A cat burgular, Kyle gleefully toes the line between hero and villain, often toying with Batman, who she is regularly romantically involved in. Her last big screen appearance was in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, in which Anne Hathaway donned the cat-suit.

Shortly after news of ‘Gotham City Sirens’ was reported, David Ayer seemingly confirmed the news, posting a picture to Twitter of Catwoman, flanked by Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.

Per the original report, ‘Gotham City Sirens’ is being penned by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who also wrote the script for the upcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ reboot. There’s no official word from Warner Bros regarding the film, but it does appear to be in the works – tentatively at the very least.

The DCEU continues this year with ‘Wonder Woman’ in the summer and ‘Justice League’ in November, with a film starring Jason Momoa’s Aquaman now filming for a 2018 release.

Beyond that, the future of the cinematic universe is uncertain. ‘The Batman’ recently lost Ben Affleck as its director (though he will star star as the Dark Knight) and there are further projects in the pipeline for Ezra Miller’s ‘The Flash’, ‘Shazam’ and ‘Black Adam’, who will be played by The Rock.
