The Gray Man 2 has got an exciting update, with The Russo Brothers confirming that the sequel is in early development.

The spy film, which is based on Mark Greaney’s series of novels, was released last year and proved to be a big commercial hit for Netflix, with the streaming service planning a major franchise.

The directors of the film, who are currently promoting Amazon Prime Video series Citadel, offered a firm update on the sequel's progress, with Joe Russo telling Collider: "We're in the middle of working on The Gray Man 2 script, so, again, everything is about the story. We are hard at work, sleeves rolled up, and more to come soon."

The first film starred Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in the lead roles, with the plot following CIA agent Sierra Six (Gosling) as he goes on the run from a sociopathic ex-agent (Evans) upon discovering secrets about top officials.

It's currently unknown which book The Gray Man 2 will be based on, but the Russos previously spoke about the process of adaptation, revealing exclusively to Digital Spy that they had to omit details from the book for the first film.

"When you're adapting a book, obviously there's way more detail in the story that's contained in the book than you could possibly put in a two-hour movie," said Joe. "So you have to make some choices. One is, you know, who is Six talking to? We can get his thoughts through a book on the page. We can't get that in a movie.

"We knew he needed somebody that he could intersect with, and help the audience understand what he was thinking, and get out his backstory about his father, etcetera," he added, referencing Ana de Armas’ role as Dani Miranda.

The Gray Man is available to stream on Netflix.
