Great British Bake Off 2023: Who went home in Dessert Week?

Judge Paul Hollywood called the bakers' efforts "disgusting and inedible" and told them all they had let themselves down.

What did you miss?

The Great British Bake Off said goodbye to Saku after all the bakers struggled through a disastrous Dessert Week.

In the Technical Challenge, judge Paul Hollywood called the bakers' efforts "disgusting and inedible" and told them all they had let themselves down.

And the contestants literally cracked under the pressure of making filled meringue bombs for the Showstopper.

What, how and why?

Saku did not make it into the quarter finals of the Channel 4 baking contes after her flavours failed to live up to Prue Leith's expectation.

The Sri Lankan-born intelligence analyst from Herefordshire served up creme caramels with cardamon that were branded too stodgy by the judges because she had used too many eggs.

And her Showstopper meringue bomb base cracked.

Leith said the bee-themed bomb was beautifully decorated.

But Hollywood told her: "It's not much of a bomb though. It's just a few choux buns sitting in the middle of a stand."

On being sent home Saku, 50, said: "I'm so proud of myself. I won't miss baking. I will miss them. I'm really sad to leave them. It's a privilege to be part of this lovely family."

What else happened on The Great British Bake Off?

The bakers were all in hysterics as they laid out their steamed treacle puddings to be judged in the Technical Challenge.

But judge Paul Hollywood did not see the funny side.

The Bake Off judge pretended to storm out of tent when he saw the piles of undercooked sponges on the plates.

He berated the contestants telling them: "That is disgusting. These are inedible. You've let me down, you've let Prue down, you've let yourselves down. Consider yourselves roasted."

Tasha came first in the Technical with Hollywood calling her puddings: "Not as terrible but still pretty terrible."

Dan raised eyebrows with his Thai Green Curry flavoured creme caramel in the Signature round.

The civil engineering resource planner from Cheshire flavoured his creme caramels with spices traditionally used in a Thai curry including lemongrass, galangal and coriander root.

Hollywood was sceptical.

The judge told Dan: "Don't say curry. Have you got curry in there?"

But he had to admit the gamble had paid off, saying: "Thats beautiful, you've got your flavours spot on."

And after impressing with his globe inspired bomb Dan was named Star Baker for the second time.

Will we be back for more?

Dan, 42, participation officer Tasha, 27, chemist Josh, 27, PE teacher Matt, 28, and PA Cristy, 33, all go forward into the quarter finals of this year's competition.

Quarter final week is also Party Week with a four-hour long Showstopper round.

And the bakers will be challenged to make a caterpillar cake in the Technical Round. Given the recent copyright lawsuit between M&S and Aldi, will hosts Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond be able to resist calling it by its name?

The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4 every Tuesday at 8pm. It can also be streamed online at
