Great Escape Actor Angus Lennie Dies At 84

Scots actor Angus Lennie, best known for his role as Ives in ‘The Great Escape’, has died at the age of 84.

Lennie passed away at a nursing home in Acton, west London, on Sunday evening.

The Glasgow-born veteran appeared in a wealth of TV series throughout his career, notably the soap opera ‘Crossroads’, in which he starred as the cook Shughie McFee.

He also starred in the likes of ‘The Saint’, ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Z Cars’, ‘Rumpole of the Bailey’, ‘Lovejoy’, ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ and ‘Monarch of the Glen’.

But it was as tragic Flying Officer Archibald Ives, the diminutive escape expert nicknamed ‘The Mole’, that he will likely be best remembered, in which he starred alongside Steve McQueen, James Garner and Sir Richard Attenborough, who also died last month.

Attenborough also directed Lennie in the musical ‘Oh! What A Lovely War’ in 1969, where he appeared on screen alongside legends like John Mills, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Dirk Bogarde, Maggie Smith and Sir Laurence Olivier.

Other film roles included Hoppy Hopkinson in ‘633 Squadron’ and a small role in ‘Tunes of Glory’ with Alec Guinness.
