Green Lantern Will Not Appear In Justice League Part 1

Anyone who’s been paying attention to how things are shaping up casting-wise in the developing DC cinematic universe may have noticed the lack of anything solid regarding one key Justice League member: Green Lantern.

It’s long been common knowledge that Henry Cavill is Superman, Ben Affleck is Batman, Gal Gadot is Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher is Cyborg, Jason Momoa is Aquaman, and Ezra Miller is The Flash.

All these actors will appear (in varying capacities) in the upcoming ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ and are set to start work on the the first of two ‘Justice League’ movies in April.

However, while a new Green Lantern movie, ‘Green Lantern Corps,’ has been confirmed for 2020, there’s been no casting news - nor do we even know which iteration of GL will be joining the Justice League, though it’s widely expected to be either Hal Jordan or John Stewart.

And it turns out this lack of news is no accident, as Warner Bros/DC do not intend to bring Green Lantern into the fold right away.

In a report at Entertainment Weekly, Warner Bros president Greg Silverman admits past failings regarding the cosmic DC hero - namely, the 2011 misfire starring Ryan Reynolds.

“We didn’t do a great job on that first Green Lantern movie. This is a character who deserves to be treated in the same way that Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman are being treated now, which is with great reverence.

“I guess I can say to the Green Lantern fans: if they can be patient with us, I think they’ll be really happy.”

Silverman seems to rule out the character showing up any sooner than the second ‘Justice League’ movie, due 2019, and even that is by no means set in stone:

“Every beat of the movie is not yet worked out. So there’s the possibility that he may or may not be in ‘Justice League 2.’

“For now, we felt that we were introducing enough characters that the best possible place we could put Green Lantern is some introduction in ‘Justice League 2,’ or barring that, a movie after.”

Though little has been said about the confirmed ‘movie after,’ ‘Green Lantern Corps,’ its title would seem to confirm a team-up movie featuring multiple Green Lanterns - potentially both Jordan and Stewart. (The words ‘Lethal Weapon in Space’ have been used to describe the project.)

Rumours had linked Chris Pine (now starring in ‘Wonder Woman’) to the role of Hal Jordan, which the actor has since denied; whilst Idris Elba and Tyrese Gibson have expressed interest in playing John Stewart.

All we know for sure is that Ryan Reynolds definitely won’t be back - and something tells us they may not go the computer-animated suit route this time either.

The Green Lantern-free ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ opens on 25 March.
