Guardians of the Galaxy 3's Will Poulter explains Adam Warlock's big moment

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 spoilers follow.

Will Poulter has opened up about his triumphant moment in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The Revenant actor made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Adam Warlock in James Gunn’s threequel, and saved Star-Lord in a pivotal moment in the movie.

As the adopted son of Ayesha, Adam is sent to cause havoc for the Guardians and retrieve Rocket – before his maternal figure is killed, leading to a change of heart.

In the climax of the film, Peter Quill drifts out into space after going back to grab his Microsoft Zune from the High Evolutionary’s disintegrating ship, but Adam saves Peter's life.

When asked what drew him to the role, Will explained it was Adam Warlock’s unique journey and "redemptive arc" in the film.

He added to The Hollywood Reporter: "It was also important in this introduction to set Adam up in such a way where you feel like you could conceivably support the rest of his journey, given that he is ultimately not an antagonist, although he starts that way."

The post-credit scene also teases the extent of Adam's redemption, as he has become part of the new generation of Guardians led by Rocket and Groot alongside Cosmo, Kraglin and Phyla.

Will continued: "It was fun — even in a short period of time and with a relatively limited arc — to explore the full curvature of that arc and arrive in a place where, as you say, he is a Guardian.

"He atones for his sins, he learns morality and he learns the difference between right and wrong. And so he aligns himself with a group who resemble that."

Though it seems likely that Adam has been set up to return in another Marvel project, it has not been confirmed if Will is set to reprise his role.

"I don’t have a clue, but I’m really keen to continue the evolution of the character and I really hope I get that chance," he said.

"But I’m certainly not taking for granted how lucky I am to be in this third instalment.

He added: "Honestly, what an honour it is to have a character like this. I genuinely mean that."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is in cinemas now.
