Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2: Everything You Need To Know

With ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ proving to be the surprise hit of 2014, a sequel was never in question. Having garnered positive reviews across the critic and fan spectrum, it also made a tidy $773 million.

So here’s a look at what we can expect to see early next year with everything we know about the anticipated movie so far.

Who’s in it?

So, and this is probably an obvious one, the guardians themselves are all back - leader and womanising wise-cracker Star-Lord, aka Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel).

Ravagers leader Yondu (Michael Rooker) is back, probably not best pleased after Star-Lord tricked him by offering up a fake orb, but he’ll either serve as a subplot antagonist or an ally. (We’re hoping the latter.)

Nebula’s (Karen Gillan) also back, along with Glenn Close’s Nova Prime as well as newcomers Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), Tullk (’Sons of Anarchy’s’ Tommy Flanagan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), and Kurt Russell as Ego. Sylvester Stallone also has a cameo, but the role remains under wraps.

What’s it about?

While details of the plot are still sketchy, we do know a few things. Firstly, it’s set in the aftermath of defeating Ronan the Accuser where Star-Lord and his entire crew have been pardoned after saving the universe, naturally.

Having seen our quick-witted hero survive after coming into contact with an Infinity Stone, we need to know what that’s all about. Which leads us to the other certainty: we’ll track down Quill’s his estranged father - a character who we’ve not known the identity of until now. As revealed during the first footage aired at Comic-Con, we get a glimpse of Kurt Russell’s Ego and get confirmation he is in fact Star-Lord’s father. Presumably once this is established in the film we will see some story development around the new character.

Ego’s essentially a planet with a face on it - presumably he took human form when he met Peter Quill’s mum - who is a deep space cosmic being that has the potential to be friend or foe, if his colourful Marvel history is anything to go by. It’s conceivable that after meeting Ego for the first time, Star-Lord and co. might encounter him later under some not-so-friendly circumstances.

We do know that 1) Thanos won’t be showing up - he’s probably a little preoccupied with The Avengers in ‘Infinity War’, and 2) we won’t see a story about Infinity Stones, presumably ‘cos Thanos might have already collected them all by this point?

Why should we be excited?

Not only is writer-director James Gunn back after the first film’s huge success and warm reception, but he’s promised that things will step up a gear with the sequel. “It’s both a bigger movie and a smaller movie because we focus more intensely on some of the characters,” he revealed to Collider.

Focusing more on personable characters and the idea of a character-led movie that addresses some poignant fatherly issues, it’s safe to say Gunn’s got fans sufficiently hyped for the follow-up. We also don’t know who the villain is, so expect a new and formidable baddie to rear his or her head and thwart our space explorers. Could Nebula take over as the main antagonist after an excellent but minor role in the first movie?

When’s it out?

We’ve still got a while to go, but ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2′ will be in UK cinemas from 28 April, 2017 - a whole week before the US.
