Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2: Kurt Russell’s Character Finally Revealed

Months of speculation over who Kurt Russell is playing in Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2′ has come to an end, after the first footage for James Gunn’s sequel revealed all at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Along with the all-new logo for the movie (as pictured above), we’ve finally had some confirmation on who Kurt Russell plays in the Marvel galaxy and, importantly, who Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) father is.

During the first early footage of the adventure film, audiences were privy to a number of moments revolving around our resident guardians: Star-Lord, Rocket, Groot, Gamora, and Drax, as well as Yondu.

The trailer, however, gave the crowd some insight into the parental origins of our hero Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) as his father’s identity was unveiled.

As described by Screen Rant, we’r explicitly told all about the franchise’s newest character, Ego.

Ego (Kurt Russell’s character) is revealed as Star-Lord’s father. Explaining that, before Peter Quill was born, he took human form and met Quill’s mother. Drax questions if Ego’s human form includes a penis, to which Ego replies: “Yes, Drax. I do have a penis. A pretty good one too.”

So as well as addressing that Russell will essentially play the role of an entire planet, it’s now clearer why Star-Lord didn’t disintegrate or explode when he held onto the Infinity Stone at the end of the first movie. And in typical ‘Guardians’ fashion it builds on the first’s enormous amount of humour that made it such a likeable hit.

Ego is a planet that, at the hands of a powerful wizard, was given consciousness. Ego then took it upon himself to travel around the galaxy conquering other planets until Thor steps in. The character is something of an ambiguous and rather strange addition to the MCU, with previous comic book history of forming alliances (mainly with Thor) only to break them and go a tad insane.

What we will see here and with Russell in tow is anyone’s guess - will he be in human form for the duration? There’s every chance Gunn will play around with the moral compass of the character, that’s for sure, promising to be one of Marvel’s most interesting new characters to date.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2′ is in UK cinemas from 28 April, 2017.
