Guy Ritchie and Charlie Hunnam talk up David Beckham's 'impressive' King Arthur cameo

David Beckham’s cameo in Guy Ritchie’s forthcoming ‘King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’ has become quite the talking point.

Will it be a case of Eric Cantona in ‘Looking For Eric’? Or Stan Collymore in ‘Basic Instinct 2’?

Well, according to Ritchie and Beckham’s co-star Charlie Hunnam, he did a sterling job on set.

“Working with David was one of the real highlights [of the film],” Hunnam told Yahoo Movies.

“I was so surprised by his approach to the work. Everybody knows David Beckham, he’s this superstar football player, he’s a giant national treasure. And I don’t think he has any real aspirations to be an actor, but Guy convinced him to come in.

“I was so blown away by his integrity, discipline, and work ethic. He’d worked tirelessly on this. He had a dialect coach, and acting coach, and he turned up nervous but determined to do a great job.

“It became so clear that it was no accident that Beckham has enjoyed the level of success that he has, because he obviously tackles everything with a level of significance and integrity and discipline.

“He kept asking me ‘Am I doing alright? Do you have any tips?’, and I said ‘Man, any tips? I’m taking notes from you, you’re killing it!’”

Added Ritchie: “David Beckham and I share the same pub, and our kids go to the same school,” the director reveals. “We’re like a couple of old mothers in the morning. ‘Hello David!’, ‘Hello, Guy! Fancy a pint later?’”

“There’s something about working with athletes that makes them consummate professionals, and they don’t have normal, egotistical issues.”

Beckham does already have some film credits to his name, of course, in the truly dreadful 2005 sports drama ‘Goal’ and its sequels ‘Goal II: Living The Dream’ in 2007 and ‘Goal III: Taking On The World’ in 2009.

Ritchie also gave him a cameo in ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ too, in 2014, as a projectionist.

‘King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’ is due out across the UK on May 19.
