Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr has shared his reaction to that surprise Disney+ release news.

Theatre fans were this week when Lin-Manuel Miranda announced that a recording of his hugely popular Broadway show is set to land on the streaming service in July, rather than in cinemas in October.

While promoting his upcoming TV show Central Park – which is set to land on Apple TV on May 29 – Odom Jr admitted that he wasn't expecting Disney to change its plans, but he understands why it's chosen to do so amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"It was a surprising, cool thing to wake up to but, you know, Hamilton has always been a surprising and cool thing to me," he told Digital Spy. "It was a ride I jumped on two years ago that Lin started.

"So I just follow where he leads, you know? If the goal is to bring people a little more sunshine and a little more joy faster – who could argue with that?"

Inspired by historian Ron Chernow's 2004 biography, Hamilton tells the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.

Praised for its inclusive casting and use of hip-hop, R&B and soul to tell a period-set story, it features a star-studded line-up including Miranda, Odom Jr, A Star Is Born's Anthony Ramos, Blindspotting's Daveed Diggs and Frozen's Jonathan Groff.

Hamilton will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on July 3. Tickets to see Hamilton on stage later in the year are available on Ticketmaster.

Central Park arrives on Apple TV on May 29.
