A revolution is coming.

On Thursday, Hulu released the first teaser-trailer for the upcoming season of the dystopian series, A Handmaid’s Tale, which will air in the US on April 28. In the past the series has arrived on Channel 4 a few days after the US air date.

When viewers last saw Elisabeth Moss’ character June Osborne, the resistance leader was liberating dozens of children but was shot by one of Gilead’s guards as the escapees ran to the waiting plane.

In season 4, Osborne is gearing up to fight back against the oppressive Gilead leadership and it looks like there’s a long battle ahead.

Season 4 will consist of 10 episodes, according to IMDB, and Moss will make her directorial debut, taking the helm in episode three. Most of the series regulars are expected to return, including Joseph Fiennes as Commander Fred and Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Bruce Miller drew parallels with the post-pandemic world. "I feel like the biggest thing, I think, is a lot of season 4 is about freedom, and also about snapping back and how quickly things will go back to normal in a lot of different ways," he said.

"I think that’s what the country is going through. I think the country feels like things are so up in the air, they’re waiting for them to ‘go back to normal’. Part of the lesson of the show is they never do. Whatever trauma you’ve gone through in that episode, you settle into a post-trauma world. It doesn’t go away."

The new season’s release was delayed several times due to Covid, after the pandemic shut down filming in the early stages. "We were two weeks into shooting when we shut down, so we didn’t get a lot in the can," Moss told Deadline in May last year.

The series has already been renewed for a fifth season.
