Hang On, Was That Sigourney Weaver In Doc Martin Last Night?

In what can only be described as an odd turn of events, Sigourney Weaver - yes, she of the ‘Alien’ movies and 'Ghostbusters’ fame – pitched up on 'Doc Martin’ last night.

Bothering Martin Clunes’ grumpy GP, she played Beth Traywick, an American tourist seeking medical treatment while visiting Portwenn.

As one might expect, it baffled viewers.

However, Clunes did let slip last month that Weaver had been bagged for the show, so perhaps it shouldn’t have been a tremendous surprise.

“I met her on the Jonathan Ross show and she said she was a big fan,” Clunes told Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain.

Teasing the part, he added: “She gets to be insulted by her own friend.”

She was also snapped filming the scenes in Port Isaac, Cornwall, over the summer, where the show has been filmed since it span off the British movie 'Saving Grace’ in 2000.

In the Daily Telegraph, TV critic Gerard O'Donovan described the episode as 'bizarre’, adding that she 'proceeded to act out the sort of clichés of transatlantic boorishness that we haven’t really associated with American tourists since the Seventies’.

Weaver joins previous Doc Martin cameo stars including Chris O'Dowd, Celia Imrie and 'Only Fools and Horses’ star Roger Lloyd-Pack.
