Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny spoilers follow.

Harrison Ford has confirmed that he is satisfied with the way Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny concludes the franchise.

The legendary actor had been vocal before the film released that this movie would be his final appearance as Indy, lending to speculation that The Dial of Destiny would kill off the globe-trotting adventurer.

It's understandable why fans might fear the worst since Ford's equally-beloved character Han Solo was killed off in the Star Wars universe, plus The Dial of Destiny's director James Mangold killed off superhero Wolverine in his filn Logan.

Yet, the latest Indiana Jones sequel doesn't kill off the title character — it does tease a possible death as part of its time-travelling plot, before revealing Indy is alive and has reconciled with long-time love Marion Ravenwood.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Ford recalled that the idea of Indiana Jones dying "came up in conversation a few times" but was always rejected by Mangold.

"I think it's a good choice to leave him in the condition we see him at the end of the film," Ford explained. "Most of his problems have been solved, dealt with.

"He's back to the form that we like to see him in, I think. And I think it's a wonderful last scene... I really like it."

For his part, Mangold insists he was opposed to the idea of killing off Indy because he felt it was the equivalent of "getting thousands of people in a theatre and hitting them in a head with a hammer".

"Death is not an ending," he argued. "The reason death worked in Logan is because of the beautiful irony of his death, which is that he lived such a painful life, that it was only in the last 30 seconds of his life that he actually got to experience love."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is now playing in UK and US cinemas.
