Sir Kenneth Branagh. We know him from the likes of Harry Potter, Shakespeare, and even Christopher Nolan's Tenet, but the actor and filmmaker is about to embark on one of his biggest roles yet.

We're of course talking about current British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.

Branagh is set to portray Johnson in a brand new drama series from Sky Atlantic, This Sceptred Isle. The five-part drama will chart the events surrounding the PM, the government, and life for the UK during the first wave of the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Sky has promised that This Sceptred Isle – which will premiere in 2022 – will shed light on some of the "most devastating events to ever befall the United Kingdom, and of a Prime Minister leading in these unprecedented times."

As well as re-imagining the experiences of Boris Johnson, the upcoming drama will draw inspiration from the scientists, nurses and doctors who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic.

Although a drama, This Sceptred Isle will work closely with real people from different government bodies and organisations, including the Department of Health and SAGE, using first-hand testimony.

Michael Winterbottom, co-writer and director of the upcoming project, said of the series: "The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic will be remembered forever. A time when the country came together to battle an invisible enemy. A time when people were more aware than ever of the importance of community.

"Our series weaves together countless true stories – from Boris Johnson in Number 10 to front line workers around the country – chronicling the efforts of scientists, doctors, care home workers, and policy makers to protect us from the virus."

This Sceptred Isle will air in Autumn 2022 on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
