Has The Terminator Franchise Been Canned?

It’s no secret that ‘Terminator Genisys’ failed to ignite the box office… but has it put the final nail in the T-800’s coffin?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it looks as though the last ‘Terminator’ movie hasn’t exactly impressed the studio… despite the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“The film did well overseas, especially in China, where it grossed $112 million,” they explain. “But the $150 million-plus movie still will lose money, and sources say the notion of a Terminator universe is on hold indefinitely.”

But this is a very different story to the one told prior to the release of ‘Terminator Genisys’.

“This summer, [David] Ellison, 32, went very public to promote the first film that he produced himself, Terminator: Genisys. He sat for a profile in GQ and gave an interview to The New York Times in which he outlined plans for a Terminator ‘universe’. Declaring that he wanted his company to be another Marvel, he said he had two sequels and a television show in the works.”

Although there’s been no official word about the status of these ‘Terminator’ sequels, it certainly sounds as though the franchise is in jeopardy… After all, ‘Terminator Genisys’ managed a measly $440 million at the worldwide box office.

And after a lacklustre effort to revitalise the saga by leaning on past glories, I can’t help wondering if ‘Terminator’ has finally met its Judgement Day.

But is that such a bad thing?

Don’t get me wrong – I’m a huge fan of ‘Terminator’ and ‘T2’… but I can’t remember a moment in the franchise that has gotten me so fired up since those first two movies. And if you ask me, it’s perhaps time to turn off Skynet and try something else.

But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
