Has The Title Of Star Wars: Episode VIII Been Leaked?

Time to grab yourself a big ol’ pinch of salt, as a new report claims to know the much-guarded official title of ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII.’

Geek Tyrant have shared an image from a member of Star Wars Celebration, an official Lucasfilm fan event, showing what would seem (emphasis on the seem) to be early official promo artwork for the in-production ‘The Force Awakens’ follow-up.

And the alleged title for the Rian Johnson-directed movie? ‘Fall of the Resistance.’

Now, as we already said - take this with a very big pinch of salt, as such an image could quite easily prove bogus, and in any case we don’t imagine there’ll be an official announcement from Lucasfilm just yet.

Even so - it’s one of those titles which seems just about feasible enough to give pause for thought. All indications are that the Resistance may be in for a rough time in Episode VIII - not unlike the trials and tribulations the Rebel Alliance went through in ‘The Empire Strikes Back.’

While nothing has been given away plot-wise, the cast members who have spoken out have hinted the sequel will be darker than ‘The Force Awakens.’

Poe Dameron actor Oscar Isaac told Rolling Stone this week, “What happens now is the heroes get tested… BB-8 gets tested too! Everybody gets tested! It’s the dark second chapter, but not really dark.“

Given that, as many vocal critics noted, ‘The Force Awakens’ hit basically all the same story beats as the original 1977 ‘Star Wars,’ it seems inevitable that Episode VIII will have more than a bit of ‘Empire’ about it.

But still - ‘Fall of the Resistance’ seems a bit final, doesn’t it? Surely the Resistance will endure in one fashion or another until Episode IX - won’t they…?

Well, whatever the title, ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ will hit cinemas in December 2017.
