Haunted house film 'Horrorstör', set inside a Scandinavian flatpack furniture store, in development

Have you ever had that nightmare where you’re trapped inside IKEA, following the arrows that never lead to the exit? Or is that just every trip to IKEA for you? A new horror film is on the way that looks set to bring that terrifying dream to life.

New Republic Pictures, the producers behind 1917, Rocketman and Black Swan, have picked up the rights to Grady Hendrix’s debut novel Horrorstör.

Set in a haunted IKEA-like flatpack furniture store, Horrorstör was first published in 2013 and was previously in development as a TV series at Fox with Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) producing.

Hendrix, whose screenwriting credits include Mohawk and Satanic Panic, will adapt the book for the screen according to a report on Deadline.

Hendrix told Deadlie, “I wrote Horrorstör to be simultaneously funny and scary, while paying tribute to the retail warriors who staff our big box stores.

“Having the opportunity to adapt my novel into a movie is a dream come true. I couldn’t be more excited about taking an audience and trapping them overnight with me in the flatpack hell that is Orsk — the ultimate haunted house, full of Infinite aisles, murderous ghosts, and incomprehensible faux-Scandinavian names.”

The story follows the story of a group of employees at a furniture store called ORSK in Cleveland, Ohio. After the store is hit with a number of unexplained acts of vandalism, some of the staff agree to spend the night in the store to investigate the strange goings on. The book is illustrated with product descriptions and illustrations of items available in the shop.

Hendrix’s latest novel, The Southern Book Clubs Guide to Slaying Vampires, was an New York Times best seller when it was published earlier this year.

There’s no release date or director attached to Horrorstör, but we’ll be following its assembly closely.
