Henry Cavill thinks sex scenes are "overused these days"

Henry Cavill has revealed that he thinks sex scenes are “overused” in modern films and television series.

The star appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with director Matthew Vaughn to promote his latest feature Argylle, and revealed that he had mixed opinions on the subject.

“I’m not a fan,” he began. “I do understand that there are certain circumstances where sex scenes are beneficial to a movie rather than just the audience, but sometimes they’re overused these days.

“It’s when you have a sense, and you’re going, ‘Is this really necessary? Or is it just people with less clothes on?’ That’s where you start to get more uncomfortable and think, ‘There’s not a performance here or a piece that is going to carry through into the rest of the movie’.

“They can be great in a movie - they can really help with the storytelling. But most of the time, the human imagination is going to trump it, so I think it can be a little bit of a cop-out if a show or movie is filled with gyrating bodies.”

Argylle sees Cavill star as the titular character, a spy conceived by the author Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard). As she writes the manuscript for her next novel, she’s thrown into a world of espionage as the line between fiction and real-life is blurred.

Most of Cavill’s scenes saw him interact with Dua Lipa, who was making her first major appearance in a film, and Cavill paid testament to his co-star for her work.

“She was marvellous to work with, good fun and game for it as well,” he recalled. “I didn't know what to expect with Dua Lipa, she's one of the biggest pop stars in the world and you don't know whether that person is going to come on with a sense of grandeur to them.”

Argylle is in cinemas now.
