Well… obviously, someone had to steal those pesky Death Star plans in order to hand them over to Princess Leia in the original ‘Star Wars’ film. But a new theory suggests that there’s a bit more to it than that. In fact, ‘A New Hope’ may have predicted the ‘Rogue One’ villain.

Or rather… the notable absence of Director Krennic.

Just how subtle is the connection between ‘Rogue One’ and the original ‘Star Wars’ movie? Well, it’s all to do with a number of empty chairs in one of Peter Cushing’s most iconic ‘Star Wars’ scenes.

Take a look for yourself:

That’s right – it’s suggested that Director Krennic, the villainous Imperial officer responsible for the creation of the Death Star, would have taken his place at Grand Moff Tarkin’s right hand… had he not been killed by Tarkin during ‘Rogue One’.

It certainly does make a lot of sense.

As the creator of the Death Star, it’s likely that even after Tarkin assumed command, he would be invited to take part in the Imperial Senate meetings. After all, he would likely still be in a position of authority… even with Tarkin snatching command of the station from him.

But would he really be sat beside Tarkin?

It’s no secret that the two Imperial officers consistently clash throughout the events of ‘Rogue One’… and with the humiliation of Tarkin assuming command of his beloved space station, I’m not entirely convinced he would have sat beside the man. Then there’s Tarkin himself, who clearly bears a grudge against Krennic. Would he choose to sit alongside a man he truly hates? I’m not so sure. Unless he relished the thought of lording it over him, that is…

Either way, it’s a cool theory.

Was this something the filmmakers took into account? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But it might well be yet-another cool connection to the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy.

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ is in cinemas now.
