Here’s What George Lucas Thinks Of Star Wars 7

George Lucas may have created ‘Star Wars’, but he’s not exactly excited about ‘The Force Awakens’.

After catching up with Lucas during a red carpet event, Vulture asked Lucas what he thought of the upcoming ‘Star Wars’ sequel. And his response is rather telling…

“I think the fans are going to love it,” he replied. “It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for.”

Ouch.

Clearly, Lucas isn’t quite such a big fan himself… but there might be a good reason for that.

‘Star Wars’ fans have been hoping for a return to the original trilogy style ever since the prequels… and that’s likely where the creative visions of Disney and George Lucas differ somewhat.

Based solely on what we’ve seen in trailers so far, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ seemingly aims to rekindle the magic of the original trilogy. And it seems that Lucas is still hung up on the prequels…

During a recent interview, Lucas admitted that he stopped using the internet after the release of ‘Episode I: The Phantom Menace’ – presumably as a result of all the prequel bashing. But let’s face it – there were plenty of good reasons for fans to dislike the prequel trilogy.

Too much CGI is often named as the number one gripe… with Jar Jar Binks topping the list.

But as a filmmaker, it seems that George Lucas would have liked to push the ‘Star Wars’ franchise in a new direction… perhaps he sees the nostalgia of ‘Star Wars 7’ as doubling back on things he’s already done – even retreading old ground.

It could even be a reminder that the prequels didn’t go down too well…

Either way, it sounds as though ‘The Force Awakens’ just isn’t the film that George Lucas wanted to see… even if Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has claimed that he ‘liked’ the movie.

Will he ever come to love ‘The Force Awakens’?

Who can say… but at the moment, it looks as though he’ll have to grin and bear it.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 17 December 2015.
