Hobbit Fans Re-Enact Battle In Czech Forest

What better way to spend a glorious summer’s weekend than covered in prosthetics and brandishing a spear?

Tolkien fans from around Europe descended on a forest near the small town of Doksy in the Czech Republic on Saturday.

They re-enacted the Battle of the Five Armies from ‘The Hobbit’, with Orcs, Wargs, the Men of Dale, Elves and Dwarves all mucking in with plastic swords and other the foam-tipped weapons.

The event began with just a handful of enthusiasts in 2000, and now almost 1000 fans attend the re-enactments, dressed in extraordinarily elaborate costume.

The battle is fought between the 'good’ side comprising elves, people and dwarves, and the 'dark’ side consisting of orcs, the ‘wild men’, or Dunlendings, and Naurrakur.

The outcome is not predetermined either, meaning that sometimes, contrary to the events of the novel, the forces of the dark side win.

It is possible to buy costumes at the event, but attendees are strongly encouraged to make their own.

In the book, the climactic battle takes place at the foot of Lonely Mountain, with Peter Jackson also bringing it to life in his 2014 epic 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’.
