Hobbit star Andy Serkis wants avatars like Gollum to win Oscars
Should CGI characters like the Hobbit's Gollum win acting Oscars?

Andy Serkis rose to fame as the man behind the computer generated character Gollum in the 'Lord of the Rings' and the 'Hobbit' films and many lauded his performance. Since then he's motion captured for 'King Kong' and 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes'.

There's no denying that Gollum's appearance in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was the stand-out sequence in the film, and was in most people's minds the saving grace of the first Hobbit movie. A large part of this was Serkis' fantastic performance.

However Serkis has recently come out and suggested that avatars or computer generated characters such as Gollum, or perhaps Benedict Cumberbatch's Smaug should be in the running for acting Oscars and that no distinction should be made between live-action actors in the flesh and computer generated characters.

He said: "People always say there ought to be a separate category for actors playing digital avatar roles but I absolutely disagree. The process of acting is exactly the same. I have never drawn a distinction playing a live action character to playing a digital character.

"It is just another set of cameras that records your performance in a different way. Like an actor puts on costume and make-up in a live action movie, with performance capture it's like put-ting costume and make-up on afterwards."

He certainly has a point especially when it comes to Smaug or Gollum because almost everything that you see on-screen in terms of those CGI characters has come from the actors, even the facial expressions. So in what way is that any less 'legitimate' than a live action actor or actress?

What do you guys think?

Daniel Wood is a long-time 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' fan after his dad read him both books as bedtime stories as a child. Of course back then he didn't understand a word he was hearing, so he's grateful they made films. Follow Daniel Wood on Twitter.
