The Sanderson sisters Winifred, Sarah and Mary are officially being resurrected again — with a release date finally announced for long-awaited Hocus Pocus sequel, due to arrive on Disney+ on September 30.

It’s been nearly three decades since the Sanderson sisters were first brought back to life in what became a major Disney comedy classic. Now, original cast members Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker are back, reprising their roles as the spooky trio.

At a House of Mouse presentation this week, attendees were treated to a preview of the forthcoming witchy mayhem. The clip showed two young girls lighting the Black Flame Candle — and we all know what that means.

“Lock up your children!” Midler’s Winnie cried in the clip. “Yes, Salem, we’re back!” Then the coven sang The Bitch Is Back by Elton John.

In the snippet, the audience also saw Doug Jones (The Shape of Water) reprise his role as zombie Billy Butcherson, Tony Hale (Transformers: The Last Knight) as town mayor Jefry Traske and Sam Richardson (Horrible Bosses 2), in an unnamed role. RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Ginger Minj, Kornbread Jeté and Kahmora Hall are also set to feature in the film, playing drag versions of the witches in a scene set at a drag show. Hannah Waddingham, who won an Emmy for her work in Ted Lasso, is also set to star.

The story will reportedly follow three teens (Dirt’s Lilia Buckingham, Gossip Girl’s Whitney Peak, and American Horror Stories‘ Belissa Escobedo) as they attempt to foil the witch sisters’ evil revenge plans.

The sequel is being directed by Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses and The Proposal). Workaholics writer Jen D’Angelo has written the comedy script, while John Debney, who composed the music for the original film, is set to return to score the sequel.

The original comedy told the story of three witches who are accidentally brought back to life by a teenager on Halloween. The witches then chase the teenager and his friends across town after they steal one of the witches’ spellbooks. The comedy film was met with mixed reviews upon release but has since become a cult classic, with film sales predictably spiking every Halloween.

Disney+ launched in November 2019 and now has close to 130 million subscribers. Hocus Pocus 2 is just the latest sequel to be announced by the studio: Obi-Wan Kenobi, which will follow the return of the Jedi master, is set to be released on May 27.
