Holby City fans will be waving goodbye to Lofty Chiltern over the festive season, as Lee Mead is bowing out of the role after five years.

Lee has already filmed his final scenes, with Lofty's exit story due to play out over the coming weeks.

Confirming Lee's exit, Simon Harper, Executive Producer of Casualty and Holby City, said: The popularity of Lofty has seen Lee star successfully in both Casualty and Holby City, a brilliant achievement. "

" He has brought some of our warmest and most tender stories to life over the last couple years and off screen is about the sweetest, most humble guy you could ever hope to work with.

"His performance in the recent stillbirth and aftermath storyline is especially fine. Thank you so much Lee for lighting up the holbyverse, we are all going to miss you terribly.”

Lofty's final episode will air on Tuesday, December 17 when he realises that his relationship with Dom Copeland has reached the end of the road.

The episode will also feature two exciting Casualty crossovers, as Lofty's former ED friends Max Walker and Robyn Miller make an appearance for his swansong.

Jamie Davis has reprised his role as Max for Lofty's exit story, while Robyn will pop upstairs to give her pal some much-needed advice ahead of his vow renewal.

Lee has been playing Lofty since 2014, when he joined Holby's sister show Casualty as the loveable nurse.

After leaving Casualty in 2015, Lee returned as Lofty a year later – this time in Holby City, where he has remained ever since.

Lofty has been at the centre of a number of big stories in Casualty and Holby, most recently the stillbirth of his son William.

However, Lofty will probably be best-remembered for his on-off romance with Dom, who he married in moving scenes last Christmas.

Holby City continues on Tuesday, December 11 at 8pm on BBC One.
