Hollyoaks star James Sutton has spoken to Digital Spy about the future of John Paul McQueen and George Kiss's abuse storyline.

Viewers have seen the pair's relationship take a dark turn in recent weeks, as George (Callum Kerr) has been manipulating his boyfriend and trying to destroy his self-confidence. One row between them also ended with George turning violent.

This week's episodes see the plot develop further, as John Paul is wrongfully arrested on suspicion of domestic violence after George's subtle attempts to frame him.

This ultimately leads to characters like Sally St Claire (Annie Wallace) starting to suspect that George isn't all he seems.

However, asked whether John Paul will soon realise what George is up to, James told Digital Spy: "No, not at all. Not at this point. That's one of the fun things that we've all played – myself, Annie, Callum and a couple of the other members of the family as well.

"John Paul just refuses to believe that this is happening and that George can be in any way guilty of betraying him, breaking his trust or worse.

"That's been fun for all of us to play – those guys trying to convince John Paul and make him believe, and that frustration.

"I've been able to play quite a confused guy a lot of the time, but equally a guy in love – and that overriding his instincts and the words of his nearest and dearest."

He continued: "I think showing domestic violence in a gay relationship isn't something that is done very often. I'm not an avid TV watcher, but it certainly feels fresh to me playing it – and I think Callum would agree as well.

"I think they've found a lot of nuance and interesting ways of telling the story that we weren't expecting, despite losing the three months of filming and storyline that we did to COVID. That has affected all of TV, especially long-running dramas and soaps."
