Jennifer Lawrence in 'The Hunger Games'

"The first thing that I work on whenever I paint is the eyes. Once I've got the eyes, everything else seems to fall into place," says Cruz. This Katniss doll recently sold for $2,500 on eBay, and he plans on selling a different iteration of Katniss, plus a Peeta doll, early next year.

Shortly after Noel Cruz graduated from college, he was shopping on eBay for his doll-collector wife and discovered the market for

lifelike, repainted dolls. Intrigued, Cruz decided to apply his background as a portrait artist to paint dolls in the likeness of celebrities, and see if he could turn a profit. Fifteen years later, Cruz makes a living repainting store-bought dolls in the uncanny likeness of Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, and other popular stars. His one-of-a-kind creations, which sell for thousands

on eBay or through private commission, take Cruz an average of three days to make – sometimes longer, if they have particularly intricate hair, tattoos, or facial features. (Cruz usually starts with a doll modeled after the celebrity he’s painting, and doesn’t re-sculpt the face or body.) The artist works more than eight hours a day and considers his meticulous work a labor of love. “Sometimes I punish myself because I can’t settle for anything less than perfection,” Cruz tells Yahoo Movies. “But in a way, it’s good, because I set such a high standard that I don’t have to worry about customers complaining.” From Harry Potter to Holly Golightly, take a look at these incredible "before"-and-"after" shots of movie characters from

Cruz’s portfolio.
