After the shocking confession from Bertolucci that the graphic rape scene in his 1972 movie was schemed with lead actor Marlon Brando behind co-star Maria Schneider’s back, the internet has turned against him.

A video that has emerged from a 2013 interview shows the film director discussing the events around how that unpleasant scene was conceived and filmed. He described how he and Brando had talked about how to do it over breakfast, and that after looking at their baguette and butter on the table, decided to use the latter as lubricant but not to tell Schneider and shoot the scene without prior consent.

However, some big names have very publicly come forward to condemn the revelations of the assault. ‘Captain America’ actor Chris Evans was vocal on Twitter, eager to speak out against sexual violence against Schneider and women in general.

His tweet was met my strong support for Bertolucci to be brought to justice, with the likes of Anna Kendrick responding to how women are treated not only in the acting industry but in response to claims of sexual assault and rape.

Schneider, who died from cancer in 2011, had long expressed her disdain for both Bertolucci and Brando. In a 2007 Daily Mail interview she revealed how she had not had the scene alterations discussed with her beforehand, only learning about it right before the camera began rolling and had no choice to back out.

“They only told me about it before we had to film the scene and I was so angry. I should have called my agent or had my lawyer come to the set because you can’t force someone to do something that isn’t in the script but at the time, I didn’t know that.”

Other high profile stars like Jessica Chastain also spoke out at her disgust at the perceived attack on the vulnerable actress.

Award-winning screenwriter and director Ava DuVernay expressed her horror at the incident too.

At the time, Schneider was just 19 and Brando was 48. After the film she never spoke to either again and says she felt violated in regards to that degrading moment. In the same Daily Mail interview, she said: “During the scene, even though what Marlon was doing wasn’t real, I was crying real tears. I felt humiliated and, to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and Bertolucci.”

The social media outrage is clear to see, with some calling to boycott watching the film and avoiding the director’s other films. Others are calling for Bertolucci, who’s now 76, to be held accountable or his actions.
