Recently, KVD Vegan Beauty announced it was launching at Ulta. Of course, many of us know the brand by its former name, Kat Von D Beauty, named after founder, makeup and tattoo artist Kat Von D.

Even if you’re not a beauty editor or heavily involved in the makeup scene, you’ve probably heard of Kat Von D. Getting her start on the TLC reality series “Miami Ink” (and later getting her own spin-off show “L.A. Ink”), previously dating entrepreneur Jesse James and allegedly having $14 million in the bank, Kat Von D knows how to draw attention.

However, the brand fell into some hot water in 2019 after a few disturbing posts from Von D prompted fans to wonder how the brand viewed people of color. Since then, Kat Von D (the person) has been removed from the brand, and KVD Vegan Beauty has quietly stepped back into the beauty sphere — and it’s better than ever.

Honestly, I believe in giving brands second chances and I do believe that KVD Vegan Beauty has some of the best products out on the market right now. Read on to hear my honest, unfiltered thoughts about the brand.

The brow pomades are not just good for brows, but also for epic eye looks. Deney Adam, Ulta Beauty pro team member and makeup artist, showed me a variety of ways you can rock your pomade to create a graphic eye. “The pomades from the KVD Vegan beauty are fantastic and very versatile, you can use them in so many different ways,” he told me at a press event while building out a yellow cat-eye.

He continued, “They are great as eyeshadows, eyeliners and even eyebrow fillers. It’s the creamy consistency that makes it easy to glide on. Plus, it dries matte which gives you longevity and does not separate.”

Personally, I thought that the brow pomades were versatile enough in color to actually use on the brows, and my favorite thing is once this product is on it is not going to budge.

Shop: KVD Vegan Beauty Liquid Lipsticks, $21

I’m not going to lie: Very few brands beat KVD Vegan Beauty when it comes to liquid lipsticks. My test of a good liquid lip is if I can apply an entire lip with only one swatch and if the color shows up as pigmented on my lips as it looks in the bottle.

Although I don’t have dark lips, my lips are pretty pink. When I apply lip color, I want it to cancel out my lip tone completely — and these liquid lipsticks do just that. The skinny doe-foot applicator also makes it extremely easy to apply as a lip liner, getting in the random crevices around my mouth.

As someone with pretty small eyes, I depend on eyeliners to really make my eyes pop. One thing I personally don’t like are eyeliners that require a lot of pressure to get the product to come out. Thankfully, Tattoo Liner doesn’t have that issue. I can safely draw out my cat-eye without feeling like my shaky hand will mess it up.

The color payoff is also pretty exceptional and lasts for hours. I love this in both the black and brown shades, where I can play around and build either an everyday look or something with a bit more pizzazz.

Shop: KVD Vegan Beauty Lock-It Setting Powder, $31

Alright, so when it comes to this setting powder, I’ll address two things. First, setting powders are extremely important to me as an oily person. I need setting powders that keep my face and makeup locked in, as well as help me avoid issues like oil, shine and sweat.

This setting powder does that. In the few hours I wore it, I did noticeably keep my shine down and my face in place. However…

This is one of those setting powders that has a white cast underneath. In situations like this, as a brown-skinned girl, I have very few options to prevent looking like Casper the Ghost. While I tried to make this powder work for my skin tone, there was just nothing that seemed to get it right.

I’ll say is that this is a good setting powder, but tread carefully if you are more melanated.
