'Honey Boy' sneak peek: Shia LaBeouf plays an abusive father in this new clip from his autobiographical film

Shia LaBeouf has called the process of making Honey Boy, a new drama he’s written loosely based on his own experiences as a child star, as being like “an exorcism”.

He says he was warned by his own people not make it, telling Variety: “My whole team, my whole professional team, was not with it. They were not wanting me to do this.”

He didn’t listen though, and now Honey Boy is earning the 33-year-old actor the level of critical acclaim reserved for Oscar contenders, putting him in prime position to feature heavily come award season. He’s tipped to receive recognition for Best Original Screenplay, if not for Best Supporting Actor playing a version of his own father.

Directed by first-time fiction feature director Alma Har'el, LaBeouf originally wrote the script as a form of therapy while he was in rehab, and we’re thrilled to share a brand new look at LaBeouf in action as James Lort, father of rising child star Otis, in a new clip above.

The surrogate for LaBeouf is Otis, played as a child by A Quiet Place actor Noah Jupe and as a young adult by Lucas Hedges.

This clip shows the young Otis talking on the phone with his mother about an acting job that has arisen.

A stray comment about whether Otis' father, played by LaBeouf, is able to travel with him sparks an angry response from the fragile patriarch.

Honey Boy is released in UK cinemas on Friday, 6 December.
