Us and Get Out director Jordan Peele has clamped eyes on Ari Aster's follow-up to last year's unforgettable horror film Hereditary.

Titled Midsommar, the upcoming movie stars Black Widow's Florence Pugh, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch actor Will Poulter and Jack Reynor as visitors to a Swedish summer festival.

There's absolutely nothing breezy or relaxing about this festival though, as Peele revealed in a new Fangoria interview (via Entertainment Weekly).

Discussing the folk horror's impression on him following an early screening, Peele said: "It plays a weird sleight of hand, where it transcends the horror of itself.

"It is an ascension of horror. I didn't feel victimised; I felt like I was being put up on this pedestal and honoured through the eyes of the protagonist.

"It's a very unique feeling for a film to conjure because after it ended, I found myself looking back at the final act like, 'Holy shit,'" he continued.

"That was some of the most atrociously disturbing imagery I've ever seen on film, and yet I experienced it with this open-mouthed, wild-eyed gape."

When you consider this is a guy who unleashed a set of barking doppelgängers upon Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke – wielding scissors, no less – and freaks out at the imagery he's witnessing, you just know that Midsommar is about to introduce new levels of horror.

You've been warned.

Midsommar will be released in cinemas on August 9 in the US and August 16 in the UK.
