Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Morata, Janssen, Icardi, Pogba, Kane, Mahrez

There’s nothing like the phrase “mammoth triple swoop” to get you fired up in the morning and, although this newspaper headline sadly has nothing to do with extinct tusked mammals, it does look like good news for Arsenal fans.

The mammoth in fact refers to the scale and audacity of the Gunners’ bid to sign three strikers who are also wanted by Manchester United, namely AZ Alkmaar’s Vincent Janssen, Inter’s Mauro Icardi and Alvaro Morata of Juventus. The Star says United are particularly “stunned” by Arsene Wenger’s pursuit of 21-year-old Frenchman Janssen, who has scored 26 goals in 33 games this season - a figure we have calculated it would take Olivier Giroud another 17 years to reach at his current strike rate.

Never a publication to shy away from openly contradicting itself, the Star claims in another story that the Gunners have been “dealt a huge blow” because Morata in fact favours a move to Chelsea rather than the Emirates, and that Arsene Wenger will be “unable to compete with the Blues’ financial muscle”.

Luckily for Gunners fans, their former right-back Lauren has got it all sorted out, suggesting in the same paper that Wenger should target Barcelona’s Luis Suarez instead. Why isn’t this guy managing a top club yet?

Pep Guardiola is planning to oversee a good old “shake-up” at Manchester City after being left unimpressed by their display against Real Madrid this week, reports the Mirror. Pep is being tipped to offload six players and replace them with West Ham’s Aaron Creswell, Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gungodan and Paul Pogba of Juventus.

However, there is a disappointing ending to the exciting Star headline “Arsenal star eyes Man City switch”, which leads to a story about Guardiola wanting to take Mikel Arteta to the Etihad as a coach.

The Times has revealed the full details of Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United contract, which includes a “performance-related” salary of up to £8m a year. So based on this season’s performances, he has probably only earned about £250 and had to go on benefits.

Less economically prudent was United’s promise, also revealed by the Times, that they would give LVG £5m if they sacked him.

To put that figure into context, it’s the same amount Harry Kane would earn in a whole year under the “bumper new deal” worth £100,000 a week he has been offered by Tottenham, according to the Mail. To put it into another context, that’s only about £10k more than Andy Carroll earns at West Ham.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are having a look at Charlton’s £6m-rated forward Ademola Lookman (Mirror), West Ham have offered Marseille £31m for striker Michy Batshuayi (Guardian) and Riyah Mahrez has apparently denied he is interested in a move to Barcelona and pledged his future to Leicester (Sky Sports). Next up, Claudio Ranieri will enlist Robert Huth to have a quiet word in N'Golo Kante’s shell-like too.
