House Of Cards Writer: Leak Was Fortunate

The writer of political thriller House Of Cards has said the accidental leak of the Netfilx show's third series caused no harm to its official release.

Beau Willimon was talking on the red carpet in London's Leicester Square for the premiere of the hotly anticipated new series.

"You know, I feel it was actually quite fortunate for something that was completely accidental and unplanned and went on smashingly well," Willimon said.

"I mean there was so much excitement as a result of that leak and so you can only take it in stride and be amused by it and be happy that so many people are looking forward to what we're releasing in just a few short hours."

Some fans were able to get a sneak peak of the series after the streaming service accidentally released episodes earlier this month.

The glitch was quickly discovered and everything was taken down within 20 minutes of its posting.

Any other leaks, however, were not happening at its premiere as actors Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, who play ruthless power couple Francis and Claire Underwood, remained tight-lipped about any upcoming plots.

"You just have to tune in at midnight if you're gonna watch. Some people will save it and watch over time but I can't be the spoiler-in-chief," Spacey insisted.

Wright joked: "I would be decapitated if I told you anything right now!"

After moving up the ranks from congressman and House majority whip to vice president the new season will centre around Underwood's quest to secure his position as president of the United States.

Adapted from a 1990 BBC series of the same name, House Of Cards first launched in 2013.

It offers an insight into the murky world of Washington politics.

Spacey spoke about how he enjoys playing a ruthless character whose scrupulousness knows no barriers and fascinates audiences.

"Oh he's just an incredibly complex character, brilliantly written. I got great directors and wonderful actors to work with and it's one of the best parts I've ever had so I'm indeed a lucky man," he said.

The show has so far garnered four Emmy awards and both Spacey and Wright have won Golden Globes.
