How fast is COVID-19 spreading in your area? England coronavirus infection rates listed

Coronavirus infection rates are continuing to fall in nearly all areas of England.

The latest case figures, for the seven days to 16 January, show 296 (94%) of England’s 315 local council areas saw a fall in infections per 100,000 people compared to the previous seven days.

Only 17 (5%) areas saw infection rates rise, while two were unchanged.

However, it comes as a record 1,820 deaths within 28 days of testing positive for COVID-19 were reported on Wednesday.

Boris Johnson said the figures were “appalling” and warned “there will be more to come because what we’re seeing is the result of the wave of the new variant that we saw just before Christmas on 18 December, or thereabouts”.

The list below contains the latest available data on seven-day infection rates in English local authority areas.

Watch: What you can and can't do during England's third national lockdown

From left to right, it reads:

  • local authority name

  • rate of infections per 100,000 people in the seven days to 16 January (this is how the list is ordered)

  • number of infections recorded in the seven days to 16 January

  • that area’s rate of infections per 100,000 people in the seven days to 9 January

  • number of infections recorded in the seven days to 9 January
