The Hunger Games: As Jennifer Lawrence is praised, who else auditioned to play Katniss?

Jennifer Lawrence has been inundated with praise for her acting talent over the last few years. From her Oscar nominated role in 'Winter's Bone' to her Oscar winning role in 'Silver Linings Playbook', the 23-year-old actress is highly in demand in Hollywood.

However, it was her role in 'The Hunger Games' that thrust her well and truly into the public eye and made her one of the most commercially viable and critically acclaimed young actresses of this generation.

With Jennifer Lawrence already getting rave reviews for her return as Katniss in 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' we thought we'd take a look at who else competed to portray District 12's heroine.

Kaya Scodelario

'Skins' favourite Kaya Scodelario had a lot of fan backing when she was rumoured to be in line for the part. When the initial auditions took place she was confusingly tweeting fans about the process, despite her reps stating that she wasn't competing for the role. Whilst it would have been great for a Brit to take on the role, we'll soon see her in the adaptation for another Young Adult dystopian novel, 'The Maze Runner'.

Lyndsy Fonseca

It's rumoured that 'Kick-Ass' star Lyndsy Fonseca was one of the final few actresses to be shortlisted for the role. She had an incredible amount of fan support before it was announced that Jennifer Lawrence had won the role but she has since stated that she auditioned at Gary Ross' house explaining "There were just a few of us girls by that point… I was lucky to get that far."

By revealing that she got to the last few girls, it's clear that Fonseca was a serious contender for the role and, although it's difficult to imagine anyone but Lawrence portraying Katniss now, I think Fonseca is a worthy runner-up to the role.

Shailene Woodley

Rising star Shailene Woodley was another contender for the role and has since been very humble in saying that she did go in for the part but that it wasn't a "great audition". She has also praised Jennifer Lawrence for her portrayal stating that the chosen actress is "perfect" for the role.

Woodley needn't have worried about losing out as she'll soon be portraying Tris in the 'Divergent' film franchise and starring in the adaptation of John Green's 'The Fault in our Stars'.

Emily Browning

'A Series of Unfortunate Events' actress Emily Browning has also revealed that she auditioned for the role of Katniss. There's no doubting that the actress has the look of the heroine but, having been a frontrunner to play Bella Swan in 'Twilight', the star has previously voiced her doubts about appearing in a trilogy through fear of exhaustion and considering she hadn't read the novels before auditioning, it's probably best she didn't get the role.

Isabelle Fuhrman

Interestingly, the actress who played the ill-fated Clove in the first instalment of 'The Hunger Games' originally auditioned for the role of Katniss. Isabelle Fuhrman revealed in an interview when promoting the first film "I was too young. I was really upset because I thought I wasn't going to be in it, and I got a call two weeks later that they wanted me to audition for Clove."

Fuhrman did such an outstanding job at portraying the sinisterly sadistic tribute from District Two that it's difficult to envisage her in any other role in the franchise but it's incredibly exciting to see which characters she will take on next.

Do you think any of these actresses should have been cast?
