Now that Daniel Craig has signed on for at least one more James Bond flick after two years of uncertainty, Idris Elba has thrown in the towel on the likelihood of ever nabbing the role.

Idris and Tom Hiddleston are the two names who were most frequently mentioned in fan circles while Craig's return hung in the balance, but Hiddleston recently ruled himself out of the running.

Sadly, Idris seems just as pessimistic about his own chances these days. In an interview with Buzzfeed, the actor didn't seem particularly upbeat when asked if he ever saw himself playing 007 in the future.

"I think not," he answered.

Idris then hedged (but only slightly):"But you really need to ask the producers. Like I can just [say], 'Hey, I'm gonna play Bond next! No, it's Idris. Hello?' No one wants it."

Social media would definitely disagree on that point, Idris. The good news is that Idris will at least be back in action on the streets of London for another series of Luther in the months ahead.

And who knows? Maybe Idris will have his shot at 007 someday too, since Daniel Craig has already hinted that Bond 25 will be his swansong with the franchise.

"I just want to go out on a high note, and I can't wait," he recently teased while announcing his return on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Another option for Idris might be as another MI6 agent in the Bondverse, with a series of interconnected spin-off movies and TV shows rumoured to be currently in the works from producers Eon.

For now, Daniel Craig will return for James Bond 25, which will be released in US cinemas on November 8, 2019, with a "traditional earlier release" in the UK to be announced in the months to come.
