Luther: The Fallen Sun spoilers follow.

Luther actor Idris Elba wants to make a sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun, which premiered on Netflix earlier this year.

The movie, which starred Andy Serkis as the villain, ended with Elba's Luther triumphant over his adversaries but en route back to prison. However, right at the end, it is implied that an MI5 agent offers Luther a job instead of going back behind bars.

This obviously screams sequel and, in a new interview with Collider while promoting his new Apple TV+ series Hijack, Elba said fans should keep their "fingers crossed" for more Luther.

"It did really well. Luther ended up being one of the top five most streamed films on Netflix, which is an incredible achievement, since it was the first film from the television show. I’m hoping to make another one," Elba said.

He continued: "I love Luther. I love that character, and I love where I can possibly take him, as a story and as a character. So, yeah, keep your fingers crossed."

The film was a continuation of the popular BBC crime series and the show's creator, Neil Cross, recently opened up about a change Netflix suggested for the movie — having a male victim.

"It’s been mentioned before that people are uncomfortable with the victimisation of women in Luther – not unfairly. For reasons I fear to interrogate too deeply, the female victims resonate and scare more deeply," Cross said

"There was a defiant part of me in the first draft of this, which was, ‘Oh f*** it – the victim is going to be a woman because that’s more frightening.’"

He continued: "And that’s the one moment where Netflix said, ‘Do you want to think about this a bit?’ I worried that it might be [less scary]. But actually, they were right."

Luther: The Fallen Sun is available to watch now on Netflix.
