Inside Out’s Phyllis Smith Didn’t Realise Sadness Was So Prominent

Those of you who have seen ‘Inside Out’ will undoubtedly agree that after watching the funny, profound and genuinely moving adventure you now understand the need to sometimes feel sad.

The emotion of Sadness was perfectly voiced in ‘Inside Out’ by Phyllis Smith, who up until the latest Pixar adventure was mostly known to viewers as a star in the US version of ‘The Office’.

After ‘Inside Out’ though, Smith is probably going to find herself inundated with further acting requests, as she brought Sadness to life in a nuanced but always funny fashion.

But Phyllis Smith has now admitted that she was as surprised as anyone by the fact that the character of Sadness featured in ‘Inside Out’ in such a prominent fashion, which is something that she didn’t realise would be the case until its promotional campaign began.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Smith insisted, “I had no concept when I was making the movie of how it was going to be edited together, and what the final product was going to be like.”

“The first indication that my character might have a lot to do in the film was when a short ‘Inside Out’ commercial aired after the Super Bowl,” she continued. “[The credits] listed Amy Poehler and then me, Phyllis. I thought to myself, ‘I got second billing?’”

Of course, Smith more than deserved to be second on the bill, as, alongside Amy Poehler’s Joy, she was the one got lost deep in Riley’s mind, leaving Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), and Fear (Bill Hader) to take over headquarters and control Riley’s emotions.

And Smith and Poehler’s ying and yang act as they tried to get back to HQ was one of the highlights of the cinematic year so far, while ‘Inside Out’ will no doubt rank on many critics and fans’ best of lists come December.

Does this mean that there will be an ‘Inside Out 2’? According to Smith there’s been no official word yet.

But thanks to the film’s stellar box office return of $818 million and the fact that it made us truly get to grips with our emotions, it would be a surprise if Pixar didn’t decide to return to the world of Riley’s head for another glorious adventure.
