Insidious: The Red Door has set a new record for the series

Insidious: The Red Door has struck gold at the box office by becoming the highest-grossing movie in the horror film franchise.

The movie, which is the fifth entry into the Blumhouse horror series, has garnered $174.3 million at the global box office to become the Insidious movie to earn the most money in cinemas.

The movie grossed $96.3 million in international markets, including $13.3 million in Mexico and $9.5 million in the UK, to reach this tally.

This means the movie beat the record of $167.8 million set by Insidious: The Last Key in 2018. Insidious: Chapter 2 earned $161.9 million in 2013, Insidious: Chapter 3 scored $112.9 million in 2015, and the first movie in the franchise landed $100.1 million in 2011.

Insidious: The Red Door is directed by Patrick Wilson, who also stars in the franchise as Josh. However, Wilson wasn't always keen on the idea of making his directorial debut with this picture.

"I didn't know if I wanted to feel like I was stepping into the shoes of who I think is two of the greatest creators in Leigh [Whannell] and James [Wan] who have defined horror for me in the past 15 years," Wilson said.

"It became this great lesson in filmmaking because I was able to be surrounded by people who do it so well. When they have confidence in themselves and in you, then it's a good working relationship."

It's safe to say that Wilson's gamble paid off, particularly at the box office. That record is particularly impressive due to the box office power of Barbie and Oppenheimer. Barbie, in particular, is breaking several records.

Insidious: The Red Door also beat Indiana Jones 5 at the box office, although the horror film did receive a low score on Rotten Tomatoes.
