Whatever way you look at it, the 2017 Oscars has fast become the most bizarre ceremony in the Academy’s 89-year history.
Everyone has already heard about Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway reading out ‘La La Land’, and not ‘Moonlight’, as the Best Picture winner, while Jimmy Kimmel also unknowingly invited a man that had just been released from prison to mix it with the Hollywood glitterati.
But arguably the most bizarre transgression from this year’s Academy Awards came courtesy of Iran. That’s because during the Iranian Labor News Agency’s report celebrating ‘The Salesman’s’ triumph in the Best Foreign Film category, they preposterously decided to redact Charlize Theron’s arms and cleavage.

It wasn’t just Charlize Theron’s Christian Dior dress that was changed, because even Anousheh Ansari, the first Iranian in space who accepted the Academy Award for ‘The Salesman’ on behalf of Asghar Farhadi after he boycotted the ceremony because of Donald Trump’s travel ban, found her attire digitally rearranged, too.
The footage was added to Facebook by My Stealthy Freedom, an organisation that aims to raise awareness of state rules in Iran.
Masih Alinejad, the founder of the group, wrote on the Facebook page, “Another typical example of the Islamic Republic’s fear of naked arms of Iranian women. It is shameful indeed, but that is how the Iranian media outlets based within the country have been covering such events for years.”
