Is Channing Tatum’s Ghostbusters Spin-off Dead?

It appears that ‘Ghostcorps’ - the male-centred ‘Ghostbusters’ spin-off announced off the back of Paul Feig’s in-production, female-based ‘Ghostbusters’ remake - might not be happening after all, or at least not with originally cited lead Channing Tatum.

Rumours that Sony were contemplating a ‘Ghostbusters’ spin-off, to star Tatum and Chris Pratt, first emerged after the Sony e-mail hack scandal. They were confirmed when the film was officially announced in March - whilst Feig’s film was still in pre-production.

Pratt has long since denied any involvement, and Tatum recently expressed uncertainty on the project (recently telling Howard Stern the situation was “messy”) - but now it seems Tatum may be out altogether.

Reid Carolin, writer of ‘Magic Mike’ and ‘Magic Mike XXL’ and Tatum’s producing partner (pictured below with Tatum), tells Screen Rant, “We’re not doing that anymore.”

Carolin explains the ‘Ghostbusters’ situation feels “too complicated. There’s a lot of things going on with that brand and I just feel like it’s over-saturated.”

It’s understandable that Carlolin and Tatum may feel this way. Whilst Feig’s all-female reboot plans have upset some fans and critics, many more felt it was a rather low blow on Sony’s part to announce another male-based reboot before Feig’s film had even started production - and reportedly without Feig’s team being told anything about it.

With that much bad feeling surrounding the project from the get-go, and with Tatum now having more power to pick and choose his projects (as he recently revealed he didn’t have on ‘GI Joe,’ much to his chagrin), it’s understandable he and Carolin might choose to pull out of ‘Ghostcorps.’

Whether this means the film will no longer go ahead at all, or if Sony will pursue it with a new star and creative team remains to be seen. Still, it’s worth noting we still have no official word from either Tatum or anyone at Sony, so there may yet be more to hear on the matter.

Meanwhile, ‘Magic Mike XXL’ opens in UK cinemas on 3 July, whilst Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’ is due July 2016.
