ITV has cancelled Rob Lowe's fish-out-of-water drama Wild Bill after just one series.

The drama starred Lowe as senior police officer Bill Hixon, who relocated from Miami to the unlikely destination of Boston, Lincolnshire.

But despite debuting to an audience of 5.7 million viewers (albeit with some dodgy accents), numbers dropped dramatically over its six-week run and it ended with just 3.2 million tuning in for the final episode.

In a statement, ITV said: "We are immensely proud of Wild Bill and loved working with Rob Lowe and the production teams at 42, MultiStory Media and Anonymous Content.

"However, Wild Bill sadly won't be returning for a second instalment. We are hugely grateful for the warm welcome we received whilst filming in Boston, Lincolnshire."

The series was never picked up by a US network or streaming service, although Lowe had told Deadline it would probably find itself on Netflix or Hulu in the future.

Speaking to Digital Spy in June, Lowe admitted his frustrations with US TV led him to taking on the role. "There's no frame of it that would ever be seen on an American network," he said.

"Streaming, maybe. But you would never in a billion years see this on Fox, NBC, ABC, CBS, TNT, FX. It completely was a palate cleanser for me, both creatively and in terms of the experience."
