Jackie Earle Haley Joins Alita: Battle Angel
Another notable actor has joined the cast of the upcoming sci-fi spectacular from James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez.
Jackie Earle Haley has signed on to co-star in ‘Alita: Battle Angel,’ according to The Hollywood Reporter.
He joins Rosa Salazar ('Maze Runner’) in the title role as the amnesiac cyborg bounty hunter, and Christoph Waltz as her scientist mentor.
The name of Haley’s role has not been revealed, but it is reported that he will portray “a monstrous cyborg in a villain role that will call for plenty of CG and greenscreen.”
It’s hardly surprising that Haley would be cast as the bad guy, as he tends to excel in such roles. The 55 year old American star remains best known as Rorschach in 'Watchmen,’ and Freddy Krueger in the reboot of 'A Nightmare on Elm Street.’ More recently he took another villainous role in TV comic book adaptation 'Preacher.’
The adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s manga series 'Battle Angel Alita’ has been a pet project of James Cameron’s since the 1990s, when the famed director bought the rights. At one point he considered making it his next movie after 'Titanic,’ before instead opting to make 'Avatar.’
As his directorial plate will be taken up by 'Avatar’ sequels for the forseeable future, Cameron opted to step back to a producer role and hand the directorial reins to Robert Rodriguez.
It will be the biggest movie to date from the 48-year old director, whose last film was 2014’s 'Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.’
'Alita: Battle Angel’ is reportedly set to start production in Austin, Texas next month.
