James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ will be tonally different to 'Suicide Squad,' insists Jai Courtney

It was a pleasant surprise to learn that Jai Courtney would be reprising his Suicide Squad character Captain Boomerang for James Gunn’s upcoming take on the original, which he has simply titled The Suicide Squad.

Courtney was one of the best things about David Ayer’s maligned original, and he is joining Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller as the only four stars of Suicide Squad to be involved in Gunn’s blockbuster.

The Australian actor has now opened up about the main change between the two films, telling Comic Book.com that it is “tonally different.”

"I don’t think it’s going to be weird. It’s kind of funny that we’re getting it up to go again and there’s a bunch of new people and a bunch of old people, too. It’s going to be different, for sure, but I think everyone’s welcoming that challenge and welcoming the new energy in.”

“I loved David [Ayer, Suicide Squad’s director], I loved working with David, I’d work with David again in a heartbeat. But Gunn, too, is quite prolific and really, obviously, does know what he’s doing. I’m excited to see what he brings to it. It’s going to be tonally different but very cool as well. The world has evolved from where we were at at that point; he’s going to have his own take on it, and it’s going to be great."

Courtney also spoke to ComingSoon.net about the film, too, revealing the reasons why he loves playing the character.

“He’s just super rambunctious and gets a lot of funny lines. i just have such a good time with it. It’s easy in a way because David Ayer told me on the first movie to find my inner s***bag, and I think it’s not that far below the surface.”

“It’s fun with boomer because there’s an irreverence to it all. It’s just a good time, it’s not so important to him. It’s all a bit of a gag, a bit of a laugh. It’s fun to have all these amazing people around on these amazing sets and play with all these toys and also get to be an Australian, man. It’s funny, I sometimes take that for granted as an actor because we’re always in different worlds.”

“Even something as simple as not having an accent frees you up! There’s a freedom within that. There’s an immediacy to it that makes it feel a little more natural. Sometimes it’s fun to run away from natural and transform, and sometimes it’s fun to feel like you know this guy intimately.”

We’ll get to see what Courtney does when he returns as Captain Boomerang in The Suicide Squad when it is released on August 6, 2021.
