Jai Courtney Says Suicide Squad Director David Ayer Is “Psychotic”

‘Suicide Squad’ actor Jai Courtney has described its director, David Ayer, as “psychotic”, but insists it’s in a positive way.

Speaking to Collider about the upcoming DC film, the ‘Terminator: Genisys’ star described his director: “Psychotic. He is the man. He’s one of the greats. I think he has an amazing future ahead of him, and I hope we get to work together again.”

A lot has been speculated about the production of ‘Suicide Squad’, especially since it was recently revealed that last-minute re-shoots were under way, but it seems the movie’s stars are more than happy working under Ayer.

“I have nothing but admiration for him, and small amounts of fear,” Courtney quips. “That about sums it up. He loves that attention to detail, and he’s not interested in comfort. Nothing is about making anything easy for anyone.”

Anyone who’s familiar with the director’s work will be aware of the gruelling shoot for World War II drama ‘Fury’, as well as the intensity he brought to screens with ‘Training Day’ and handheld styled ‘End of Watch’.

But the actor insists Ayer’s style of making movies helps get the best out of his stars: “And that’s not about making it hard, it’s just that when you’re off centre, it creates a space for wonderful things to happen. That’s the world he likes to play in, and I think that’s very exciting.”

Courtney’s praise certainly seems to correlate with Ayer’s filmmaking reputation, but it hasn’t stopped the cynics from speculating over the nature of ‘Suicide Squad’s’ panic re-shoots, with claims that they’re desperately trying to lighten the tone by adding comedy to the dark film, after ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ was scathed for its humourless endeavour.

‘Suicide Squad’ is in UK cinemas on 5 August, 2016.
