Jake Gyllenhaal is the latest to join the league of actors willing to go hungry for a film role.

Appearing on the red carpet for the Hollywood Film Awards, the 32-year-old actor appeared to have aged 20 years after losing 20 pounds for his part in forthcoming thriller 'Nightcrawler'.

He plays a crime reporter in the film who stumbles into the dangerous Los Angeles underworld, and has said that he wanted his character to be 'literally and figuratively hungry'.

“The movie takes place, in a land where I think there is a desert in a lot of ways, great opulence, and at the same time, great vastness and emptiness,” he told US Weekly.

“I think [I've lost] probably a little over 20lbs , something like that,” he added to People magazine.

“It's not different than getting into character for anything. It's more about believing where you are and being present where you are. Who's to say what the process is? I have a strange one… but I love what I do.”

The directorial debut for screenwriter Dan Gilroy, who penned 'The Bourne Legacy' and 'Real Steel', it also stars Bill Paxton, Rene Russo and Brit actor Riz Ahmed.

Gyllenhaal can count himself alongside Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, who both lost huge amounts of weight playing AIDS sufferers in the forthcoming 'Dallas Buyers Club'.

Jennifer Garner recently told how she 'hated' seeing her co-stars McConaughey and Leto slimming down for the roles.
